EDUCATION WRITING
Patrick is an award-winning music education author, and is also the chief content writer for I Can Compose.com.
His first book ‘You Can Teach Primary Music’ (2010) was squarely aimed at the non-specialist teacher. This was followed by the more ambitious ‘How to Create a Successful Music Ensemble’ (2012), a book designed as an aid for first-time ensemble leaders which also includes step-by-step advice on how to arrange music for amateur instrumental and choral groups. The book was named best Print Resource at the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence (2013).
Patrick’s most recent work, an e-book co-written with colleagues Jane Werry and David Ashworth, is the very successful ‘Being a Head of Music: a Survival Guide’. This is aimed at new Heads of Music, especially those who are one-person departments and have nobody else in the school to turn to for advice. The book has proved to be very popular, and is now widely-regarded as the ‘bible’ for first-time Heads of Music. It was named Music Education Product of the Year at the the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence (2018).
